We'd like to extend a warm welcome to our new Hammond House member and featured author, Christopher Owen.

Edgbaston-born Christopher is an accomplished actor who trained at RADA and worked in theatre, TV and film for over 55 years. Having retired from acting, he is now an established author.

Christopher's latest book America Awaits Us, My Lovely and other stories includes his grandmother's story in fictional form.

Christopher's grandmother Clara Withnall, from Birmingham, sailed to America in 1903. She went to join his grandfather and they were married on the day she arrived in New York.

Sadly, Christopher's grandfather later deserted the family and his grandmother and their four children returned to Birmingham. They were destitute and Christopher's mother and her siblings were separated and placed in children’s homes.

Christopher tells his family's moving story in fictional form in his book America Awaits Us, My Lovely and other stories which is now published by and available from Troubador Publishers:

In recent years, his stories have been published in a number of literary journals and anthologies.

Christopher was short-listed for the Bridport Story Prize 2019; won 2nd prize for the Wells Festival of Literature prize 2019, and was long-listed for the Royal Society of Literature V. S. Pritchett Short Story Prize 2018 and for the London Short Story Prize 2018.

Christopher's story Sarah was shortlisted for the Hammond House 2019 International Literary Prize and was published in the Anthology Leaving.
