Congratulations to Laura Theis from Oxford, UK for achieving 3rd place in our Performed Song songwriting category - with her song 'Defy Cupid' - in our 2021 Hammond House Publishing International Literary Prize.
Laura Theis writes poems, stories and songs in her second language. Her poetry debut 'how to extricate yourself' (Dempsey&Windle) was selected as the winner of the 2020 Brian Dempsey Memorial Prize and nominated for an Elgin Award.
Her internationally published body of work has been widely anthologised, appears in journals such as Rattle, Strange Horizons and Mslexia, and received accolades such as the 2021 Oxford Brookes Poetry Prize, the 2018 Hammond House Publishing International Literary Award, the AM Heath Prize and the 2020 Mogford Short Story Prize.
She was also a finalist for over forty international literary awards including the BBC Short Story Prize, the Alpine Fellowship, the UK National Poetry Award and the Aesthetica Creative Writing Award.
Her award-winning music received rave reviews and has been featured on film soundtracks, radio plays, and podcasts such as Welcome To Night Vale. She lives in Oxford with her partner, a neuroscientist, and her dog, a lunatic.
