Congratulations to JMO from Scotland - their song 'You Are The Light' was the 1st place WINNER of the Performed Song-Songwriting category in our Hammond House Publishing 2021 International Literary Prize - awarded by University Centre Grimsby
JMO is a new collaboration between composer and guitarist Malcolm MacFarlane, vocalist Lynne O'Neill and poet Caroline Johnstone.
The project was born from a desire to create uplifting and beautifully crafted music with inspiring lyrics, reminding us that music and our wellbeing are interconnected. An Artist in isolation can create great things, as we've seen in recent times, but group energy really brings music to life. This project seeks to weave the skills of three different artists together to give power to creativity through connection - the power of 3!
Caroline Johnstone grew up in Northern Ireland and now lives in Scotland. She is a poet and author and has been widely published in the UK and Ireland. In 2019, she won the Waterways Storymaking Festival and Imprint Writing Awards, the Beyond Borders Round III competition and was long-listed for the Over The Edge New Writer of the Year. In 2020, she was mentioned with honours in the Cinnamon Pencil Award.
Malcolm MacFarlane is a multi award-winning guitarist, composer and producer. Previous groups include the Scottish Guitar Quartet, Spoken Mirror and the MacFarlane/McNeil Quintet. To date he has produced over 30 albums of original music as well as sustaining a long freelance career with top names from many genres of music ranging from Pop to Contemporary Classical music. He is also a noted educator with the RCS, Edinburgh University, NYJOS, Edinburgh College and Strathclyde University as some of his previous and current employers. Latest projects include solo releases, JMO and Sequence, with all his music available on Bandcamp.
Lynne O’Neill has been singing folk and jazz music since 1993 and is based in Scotland. She trained with jazz vocalists in the USA and her recording and performing with folk bands and her trio of jazz musicians has taken her all over the UK and Europe. She also works in music education teaching singing, and some of her recent and previous experience includes Strathclyde University, Vocal Jazz workshops, BBC Choir of the Year, and leading Jazz Choir Scotland.
