Congratulations to Jean Cooper Moran from the UK for achieving 2nd place in our songwriting/lyrics category with her song lyrics 'Woman in the Shadows' in our 2021 Hammond House Publishing International Literary Prize.

Jean was placed second in the 2021 Hammond House Lyric writing competition on the theme ‘Stardust’. She writes poetry but has also written song lyrics, some for the amateur stage, and was inspired to enter the competition by both the theme song for the competition, and through an introduction to the work of Missy Mazzoli and Michael Zapruder, both of whom have set poems to music. The story in her lyric came from images from film and from the lives of women in isolated communities who were outcast because they were facially injured.

Creating the lyric was an interesting journey for a poet because the rhythm and metre match to music not to the spoken word. The song had to be the focus and was an exciting challenge to meet.

Jean’s professional background is in technology, overseas development and medical research and she uses some of that experience in her writing. She enjoys the support of and involvement with Hammond House Publishing and agrees that entering competitions for lyric writers is great, because ‘hope springs eternal and it’s good practice.’

Sponsored by the University Centre Grimsby, prizes will be awarded at our Hammond House Publishing annual literary festival to be held on 9th February 2022 - the theme for our 2022 International Literary Prize will also be announced.
